Geography

Nestled along a mountain river and in a wide valley along a creek, Cullowhee was originally a Cherokee village that may have been established as early as 3000 BCE, in a valley of the Tuckasegee River between the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains, close to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Reservation (officially known as the Qualla Boundary) and some of the nation's most beautiful national forest lands. At an elevation of 2,100 feet (640 m), the campus enjoys the best of all four seasons. While winters in the valley are generally mild, snow is not unusual in the higher elevations of Jackson County around Cashiers or Balsam. In nearby Sapphire Valley, snowmaking machines maintain prime snow skiing conditions from mid-December through February. The many rivers, streams and forests surrounding Cullowhee, combined with the mild climate of Southern Appalachia, offer many opportunities for outdoor activities. Climbing, hiking, biking, rafting, kayaking, and camping are a few of the outdoor activities nearby. Cities within a three-hour drive of WCB's main campus include Atlanta (Georgia) to the south; Charlotte (North Carolina) to the east; Knoxville (Tennessee) to the northwest; and Greenville (South Carolina) to the southeast.

WCU named ‘top adventure college’ in outdoor magazine poll: — Western Carolina University has been announced as the No. 1 college for outdoor adventure in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic by a leading outdoors magazine. — Magazine staff member Jess Daddio wrote that “WCU’s stunning campus is home to some serious adventure. Both the Parks and Recreation Management (PRM) department and the Base Camp Cullowhee outing program offer students a chance to get the quintessential experiential education experience.” “For example, a professor might approach us about including a climbing wall session, a group development team-building activity or a guided hike to a geologic feature in a class,” Josh Whitmore, WCU's associate director of outdoor programs.
